Phase One Of Sh 1.4 Billion Liwatoni Fishing Complex To Complete By December

The government will create some 3,000 jobs once the Liwatoni fish processing plant is operational.

Salim Mvurya, mining and blue economy cabinet secretary, says apart from the direct job, other related ones will be created as soon as the plant opens its doors.

CS adds that the government has pumped Ksh1.49 billion in the first phase of the Liwatoni Fisheries Ecosystem to complete its construction so as to start processing.

“The first phase will be fully funded by the government while the second phase will be under the public private arrangements.”

Inspecting the facility on August 24, 2023, Mvurya says Liwatoni will have the capacity to process 1,000 tonnes in one segment once it is operational.

The Liwatoni project is supposed to be complete and operational except for lack of funds that have delayed its completion for processing works.

“By December phase one will be ready but we anticipate by June next year all works will be completed.”

The government has so far channelled Ksh200 millon and will soon authorize another Ksh5 million.

The secretary says by-products from the plant will be used as a fertilizer as well as in aquaculture at Kibonyo fish farm.

Liwatoni fisheries will also be a landing point for fishermen’s produce both local and international.
